Singapore NDP 2021 animated film features HDB blocks, shophouses and landmarks

Unless you’re unaware, the Singapore National Day Parade (NDP) 2021 celebrations will be held tomorrow (21 August 2021) at The Float @ Marina Bay. It was postponed due to the recent Covid-19 restrictions and comes after the ceremonial parade, which was held on 9 August.

While this year’s NDP 2021 celebrations will be smaller in scale with 600 performers, its significance and impact have been felt, thanks in part to the viral NDP song The Road Ahead.

However, the best has yet to come it seems. There is one particular animated film coming out tomorrow which has gotten Singapore homeowners and residents a little teary-eyed and nostalgic.

Check out the teaser here:

The 14-minute animated feature film promises to show different residents in Singapore, across different generations and timelines, undergoing change, strife, hopes and dreams, as the island city emerges to become the modern and resilient country that it is today.

Created by Robot Playground Media, the animated film will be part of the NDP 2021’s integrated virtual performance for viewers at home and has been reported to feature between 12,600 and 21,000 hand-drawn animated frames.

Award-winning filmmaker Boo Junfeng, who reprises his role as creative director for this year’s NDP celebrations, shared some still photos from the animated film on his Facebook page a few days ago. What drew the most feedback was the attention to detail of these hand-drawn stills, including the HDB blocks, school and HDB lift lobby void deck.

If you ask us, we think some of the residential buildings are actual locations, but some of us can’t quite put a finger to where exactly they are. If you know, drop us a comment.

Well, if you’re as amped up as we are about tomorrow’s celebrations, and the debut of Singapore’s very own NDP animated film, keep your schedule free and stay tuned with your family and loved ones.
