With Singapore being such a beautiful Garden City, there are just too many HDB BTO projects to feature at a time. You probably realised that in recent years, almost all of the new HDB BTO projects feature sprawling rooftop gardens, greener yet functional fixtures and so on, instead of cold, hard concrete.

Yup, it’s part of the SG Green Plan, aiming to transform Singapore into a more sustainable and greener city by 2030. Add to this HDB’s existing urban greenery solutions and the many community gardens we see coming up in newer developments, with Tengah’s as a prime example.

Plus, living near nature and green spaces can benefit us too. Not only does it keep us cool by lowering urban heat, looking at foliage can reduce our stress levels and motivate us to stay fit. Indoor plants can even clean the air in our homes!

Ahhh, but we digress. Here are seven more HDB BTO projects with ‘chio’ gardens and eco-friendly features for your viewing pleasure (and perhaps to consider for your future home).

In the second iteration of HDB BTO projects with pretty gardens and eco-friendly features, you’ll find HDB BTO projects that boast sea views (Punggol Northshore district), massive green decks, those that are close to nature (whether man-made or not) and one that towers above all with an unbeatable vantage point, 48 storeys high.

Here’s a table summarising the outstanding HDB BTO projects with ‘chio’ gardens and eco-friendly features we’ve featured.

1. Casa Clementi: Massive Green Deck with 660m Jogging Track

Casa Clementi, completed in 2012, is one of the largest HDB projects to date, with over 2,234 units. The up to 40-storey-high development sits on a massive 56,630 sqm plot of land, of which almost 30% is a sprawling landscaped deck (15,460 sqm) over the basement carpark. About half of that space is dedicated to green planters.

The development has also clinched many awards, including the 2014 Green Award – Silver Prize in the World Landscape Planning Design Competition. It was also recognised by NParks’ Landscape Excellence Assessment Framework.

Looking out of their HDB windows, residents can enjoy the verdant view instead of being hit with the glare from bare concrete. The greenery is also surprisingly self-sustaining, with thoughtful built-in features that include sub-surface drainage modules, careful selection of plants that require minimal maintenance, and a network of irrigation lines to deliver nutrients and water.

This green deck also houses community amenities such as fitness and play stations, open plazas and even a perimeter pathway that doubles up as a 660m jogging track.

2. ParkEdge @ Bidadari: Sprawling 10-hectare Park & Lake at Your Doorstep

Just launched in February 2021, ParkEdge @ Bidadari is one of the hottest HDB BTO projects in Bidadari (categorised under Toa Payoh by HDB). It’s within walking distance to two stations, one on the Circle Line and one on the North-East Line, allowing for maximum convenience and connectivity. There are tons of schools and amenities in the area as well.

ParkEdge @ Bidadari is also one of the coolest developments in the area, literally. The project is right beside the upcoming 10-hectare Bidadari Park that’s expected to be completed this year (hence its name, ParkEdge). The new park is set to be a rest stop for migratory birds that you can spot from September to March every year. Time to invest in a pair of binoculars so you can birdwatch while relaxing on one of the many benches made from reused felled timber.

Bidadari Park also houses the $25 million man-made Alkaff Lake that’s the size of two football fields, a 700-metre heritage walk, experiential trails, a boardwalk, and a kids’ play area. There will even be a couple of community gardens around the park for residents to flex their green fingers.

In addition, residents of Bidadari will get their water from an underground service reservoir (built beneath the community lawn in Bidadari Park) – Singapore’s first – that will help to boost water pressure during periods of high demand.

Of course, within the development itself, ParkEdge @ Bidadari has its own playgrounds and fitness stations, roof gardens atop two residential blocks, and a multi-storey carpark that is linked via sky bridges to residential blocks.

3. Northshore StraitsView: Impressive Sea Views in an Eco-Town

Launched in November 2015, the Northshore StraitsView HDB BTO flats form the new hip and happening sea-facing Northshore district in Punggol. Northshore StraitsView is perhaps one of the prettiest flats, with unblocked views of the vast expanse of blue (or grey, or glittering gold, depending on the weather and time of day). And yes, some units are directly facing the sea!

Residents at Northshore StraitsView can stroll or cycle along the waterway park connector that runs parallel to the entire length of the project. Along the way, they’ll encounter pockets of green packed with recreational facilities, cafe and makan places, amenities and retail outlets.

Within the development, enjoy the roof gardens and a sky terrace, as well as a central green designed to look like waves of the sea with the usual facilities and common spaces.

To fulfil the vision of Punggol as an Eco-Town, eco-friendly features include separate chutes for recyclable waste, eco-pedestals in bathrooms, a rainwater harvesting system, regenerative lifts, bicycle stands, parking spaces for shared cars, as well as a slew of smart features to reduce energy consumption and to save water.

4. Keat Hong Verge: Take Cover Under a Canopy of Green

Keat Hong Verge is located in Keat Hong Neighbourhood 8 in Choa Chu Kang, a new neighbourhood that used to be the former Keat Hong Camp. The estate, designed with a military-inspired theme to hark back to its roots, has seen a slew of new housing projects reach completion since 2016.

Keat Hong Neighbourhood 8 projects also feature extensive rooftop greenery, in which the green plot ratio has to be at least 4.5, and the estimated green cover provision of 45 to 60%, according to new HDB guidelines.

As such, Keat Hong developments that include Keat Hong Verge will have a leaf area of onsite plants that is 4.5 times the site area, and an average of 55% of green cover, which includes tree canopy and planting areas that provide shade. The name itself, Verge, references the expansive landscaping within the development, including a series of interconnected green spaces that link residents to communal facilities such as children’s playgrounds, fitness corners, resting shelters, and pergolas.

5. City Vue @ Henderson: Fireworks Displays from Sentosa, Sky Parks at Level 28

Word has it that the views from certain units at City Vue @ Henderson stretch all the way to the Greater Southern Waterfront area, with regular views of the fireworks displays from Sentosa, and a bird’s eye view of Singapore’s city skyline, which includes the Singapore Flyer. The skyscraper-like HDB BTO towers in the middle of Bukit Merah, the highest floor at 48 storeys high.

However, the development is not just all about being tall with great views. The HDB BTO project won Surbana Jurong the HDB Design Award 2019 thanks to the team’s efforts in conserving both the memories of the old estate around it and the lush greenery including mature rain trees.

The old concrete carpark was also transformed into a lush green space interspersed with playgrounds; and sky parks were established on the 28th floor, with sky bridges to link the play spaces. To free up the internal space, columns of the towers were also boldly pushed out to the exterior, for elegant clean lines amidst a canopy of trees. Residents can also socialise under the verdant canopy, thanks to seats and tables placed there.

6. Tampines GreenGlen: East Side, Best Side with Nature, Shopping & Amenities All Around

Launched in 2019, Tampines GreenGlen HDB BTO joins the “Green” series of projects in the Tampines North area (GreenBloom, GreenRidges, etc). It will be just 300m from the upcoming Tampines North MRT, which is slated to be completed by 2029 when the Cross Island Line opens.

True to its name, GreenGlen residents will be close to nature, which include Sungei Api Api, a proposed park and even a short bus ride to Pasir Ris Park. Even the blocks themselves are designed to resemble an undulating valley, its six residential blocks ranging from nine to 16 storeys high.

Residents can also stroll along a meandering wellness trail from the park, terrace garden and roof garden on the top deck of the multi-storey carpark. There’s even a multi-sensory garden within the development.

For those into reducing their carbon footprint, major retail and recreational attractions include White Sands, Century Square, Tampines Mall, Tampines One, Our Tampines Hub, and even IKEA, Courts Megastore, Giant are all within walking or cycling distance. 7. Parc Clover @ Tengah: Car-free Living in the Heart of a Park

Parc Clover @ Tengah gets its name from the clover-like arrangement of its residential blocks. Each of the four clusters boasts a central courtyard, with a total of 1,124 units available from eight to 14 storeys. Other than the central courtyard, green spaces within this development include sky terraces at one of the blocks, a landscaped roof garden atop the multi-storey carpark.

Not to mention Parc Clover @ Tengah is in Singapore’s highly anticipated HDB “Forest Town”, which will be fully landscaped with a town-wide Active, Beautiful, and Clean Waters design strategy, community gardens, lush outdoor spaces, cycling paths, a car-free town centre (vehicles will drive underground). Another smart and eco-friendly feature to look out for is autonomous vehicles, to be used as a first mile, last mile solution for residents.
