With the Barbie movie premiere in Singapore, here are some pink-themed houses/buildings where “anything is possible”!

Greta Gerwig’s live-action film, Barbie, premieres in Singapore on July 20. Based on the Mattel’s Barbie fashion dolls, the film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, with a large ensemble cast including Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa and John Cena.

One of the highlights from the movie’s set design are the ridiculously out-of-this-world Fuchsia Fantasy Dreamhouses of the toy brand. According to news reports, there was a period when supply of Pantone 219 C pink paint went out of stock worldwide because they were used for the film!

Affectionately termed as “Barbiecore”, the pink-heavy aesthetic has become a staple theme for the movie’s promotion. There’s even a life-sized Barbie/Ken dreamhouse you can now rent on AirBNB.

If you’re gearing up to watch the film, why not stop by or be wowed by some of these similarly pink-themed houses and buildings in Singapore? Who knows, you may even want to set off on a pink photo/video-shoot tour of some of the publicly accessible ones for your Instagram, Threads, TikTok, etc. before heading to the premiere!

The traditional Singapore shophouse, located at Koon Seng Road, is part of a row of other shophouses along that stretch. It has a pink exterior with blue wooden shutters, which makes it stand out from the rest.

While most of us buy and invest in residential properties, shophouses are often seen as great investment options to the financially-savvy – if you have the dough for it.

For example, a freehold shophouse unit in Tanjong Pagar was sold for S$6.2m in 2013, and then resold for S$9.1m in 2017 – netting the seller a 47% profit in over 4 years.

The reason why some shophouses command such lucrative gains are because they are often in central locations or high-foot-traffic, gentrified neighbourhoods. They are also rare (which is always a good thing for value) and protected by the government as they’ve been given conservation status.

Most shophouses can be found in historic districts like Boat Quay, Chinatown, Kampong Glam, Cairnhill, Emerald Hill and of course, Joo Chiat.

Still lounging around in Joo Chiat after that shophouse photoshoot? Then saunter over to the Joo Chiat Community Club at 405 Joo Chiat Road.

Since early 2022, social media influencers have gone to the Joo Chiat CC to take Insta-worthy photos because of its pastel pink walls and Brutalist-inspired architecture.

Thanks to its symmetrical no-nonsense columns, cylindrical staircases, peek-a-boo circular openings giving #Wes Anderson-esque vibes, Instagrammers wearing their Outfits of the Day (#OOTD) can get some really flattering and is-this-even-Singapore? shots just using the CC as a backdrop.

3. Conservation House in East Coast

If you’re an adventurous explorer, you probably have seen a three-bedroom conservation house off East Coast Road (near the junction with Joo Chiat Road) with its inviting pink facade, green-coloured zinc roof and walk-up staircase.

Curious passers-by and tourists have made their way to the house just to take a snapshot of its colourful exterior.

At the time of writing, the landed house is actually listed for sale, for S$4.5m. With a land size of 1,304 square feet and built-up area of 1,938 square feet (including front porch and covered terrace), that translates to S$2,322 per square foot.

The house is within 1 kilometre of schools like Taonan Primary, Tanjong Katong Primary, Haig’s Girl School and CHIJ (Katong) Primary. It even has a basement!

If you’re a fan of all things Barbie – and pink is one of your favourite colours – then buying a house with ready-made pink walls may help you “follow your dreams”!

With beautiful pastel pink walls adorning its living room and dining area, the HDB resale flat is located at 90B Telok Blangah Street 31 (Telok Blangah Parcview) and comes with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

At the time of writing, it’s being listed for sale for S$900k. At 1,001 square feet, that translates to S$899 per square foot.

The flat itself has recently completed its Minimum Occupation Period (MOP). Its 99-year lease started in December 2018, so it has about 94 years and 5 months more to go. What can we say, this house is fresh off the pink!

Designed by interior design firm The Scientist, the flat boasts rooms with Victorian-style designs in Bold Black and Gold colours, and black-and-white checkered flooring.

The flat is a corner unit and is 1 MRT stop to Harbourfront. To complete the classy style, home fixtures were also designed using brass, marble, leather and wood.

5. HDB blocks in Pasir Ris with pink facade

Last but not least, there are blocks of flats in Pasir Ris which stand out because they have variations of pink hues about them. Located at blocks 746-752 Pasir Ris Street 71, these HDB flats are definitely a great backdrop if you want to get your Barbie-shoot vibes on – think low-to-high angles, so you can flaunt your pink high-heel shoes and ahem, flourishing dress.

Most of the flats here were completed in late 1996, which means they have about 72 to 73 years remaining on their leases.

If you’re thinking of getting a home around that neighbourhood, here’s a list. Prices may vary, but the current average per-square-foot price for HDB flats in Pasir Ris is around S$501 at press time.
