City Developments Limited (CDL) is the first property developer in Singapore and the first real estate conglomerate within Southeast Asia to sign the WorldGBC’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment.

City Developments Limited (CDL) has pledged to reach net zero carbon operations for buildings under its direct control by 2030.

This comes after it signed the WorldGBC’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, making it the first property developer in Singapore and the first real estate conglomerate within Southeast Asia to do so.

The commitment will also see CDL advocating for all building to be net zero carbon in operation by 2050.

A net zero carbon building is one that is highly energy-efficient and powered from on-site and/or off-site renewable energy sources and offsets.

Pledging to the commitment means CDL will disclose, reduce and verify operating emissions of its managed buildings.

CDL has mapped out ways to achieve its 2030 target, such as leveraging smart technologies and innovations to maximise the energy performance of buildings; achieving 100% renewable energy; phasing out diesel across all operations; developing a low-carbon investment roadmap; and educating building users to change mindset and action.

CDL also developed a Smart, Sustainable and Super Low Energy (3S) Green Building Framework, which is aligned with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Super Low Energy (SLE) buildings requirements and international standards to advance health and wellbeing within buildings.

In fact, plans are underway to introduce BCA SLE certified buildings within its portfolio.

“CDL recognises that decarbonisation is a critical step towards global climate action and this is especially relevant to the building and construction sector which accounts for a significant amount of carbon emissions,” said CDL Group Chief Executive Officer Sherman Kwek,.

“Our pledge to the WorldGBC’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment marks a key milestone in our sustainability journey as we take affirmative action to support the global agenda towards net zero by 2050. Taking this bold step forward reinforces our climate mitigation and adaptation efforts to build a more sustainable future in Singapore and abroad,” he added.
