More than 53% cited poor space allocation as a contributor to stress, discomfort, and dissatisfaction among family members.

A survey commissioned by StorHub Self Storage showed that the limited living space in homes has affected the state of mind of Singaporeans, reported Singapore Business Review (SBR).

“Space is a limited commodity in Singapore. This poll helped us understand and examine deeply how the pandemic may have exacerbated and impacted Singaporeans’ state of mind and mental well-being,” said StorHub Self Storage (Singapore) CEO Luigi La Tona as quoted by SBR.

The survey examined the impact of lack of space on residents, the residents’ interpretation of space by different generations, as well as the optimisation of space depending on need.

More than 53% cited poor space allocation as a contributor to stress, discomfort, and dissatisfaction among family members.

“The findings have demonstrated that poor management of space leads to compromised mental wellbeing for many Singaporeans. It reiterates the point that it is not healthy to be confined in small spaces for long periods of time,” said La Tona.

The need for space emerged as the fourth most important concern among Singaporeans at 48%. The top three concerns listed were family at 63%, health (59%) and job security (51%).

Many respondents said the concern on living space came about following the enforcement of circuit breaker measures during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Older Singaporeans, aged between 36 and 60, consider the lack of space as restrictive, impacting their state of mind. This group scored higher at 63% compared to younger Singaporeans aged 18 to 23 at 53%.

Moreover, the survey showed that 63% of Singaporeans kept items they did not use for over 24 months. About 75% of Singaporeans also decluttered their homes during the pandemic.

Over 62% believe that larger homes and more space will help them adapt to the change.
